SHIAs and
the month of Muharram
“Verily
the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so
was it ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the Heavens
and the Earth; of them four are sacred. That is the right
religion, so wrong not yourselves therein.” [Surah Tawbah: 36]
The sighting of the new moon marks
the beginning of a new Islamic year. The real significance of
the month of Muharram lies in the major turning point is the
course of Islam as clearly said in the above Ayat.
According to a Hadith narrated by
Hazrat Abu-Bakr (R.A):
"Verily
time has completed its cycle and returned to its original stage
as it was on the days Allah created heavens and the Earth. The
year consists of twelve months, four of which are sacred. Three
of them occur consecutively, Zul Qa’dah, Zul Hajjah and
Muharram. Rajab, which occurs between Jamadi-us- Sani and
Sha’ban." [Bukhari]
From the four sacred ones Muharram
is the one blessed with specific virtues.
The Holy Prophet (S.A.W) is
reported to have said:
"The
best of fasts beside the month of Ramadan is the fasting of
Allah’s month of Muharram and the best of Salat beside the Fardh
(compulsory) Salat is the Tahujjud Salat." [Muslim]
It is absolutely clear that the
month of Muharram had been a month of great significance and
importance since the time of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W) especially
the 10th of Muharram carries great importance. The
Holy Prophet (S.A.W) regarding the fast of 10th
Muharram said:
"It is a
compensation of the (minor) sins of the past year." [Muslim]
The Holy Prophet used to observe
fast specially on 10th of Muharram and commanded his
followers [Sahabah (R.A)] to do so because it is proved by the
history of Islam that the month of Muharram carried great
importance specially the 10th of Muharram.
The tenth of Muharram also carries
great importance for the Jews and the Christians. When the Holy
Prophet (S.A.W) arrived in Madinah and saw the Jews fasting on
the 10th of Muharram, He (S.A.W) asked: “What is
this?” They replied: “This is the day when Allah saved Moosa
from drowning, so we fast on this day.” Holy Prophet (S.A.W)
said: “ We have more right to Moosa than you”.
The SHIAs, who in regard to their
beliefs and practices are non-Muslims but still call themselves
Muslims, observe this month in a very different and baseless
manner. As the new Islamic year starts (month of Muharram) they
wear black clothes (also green) as a sign of mourning for Hazrat
Hussain (R.A), the great nephew of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W).
Majalis are held in the first 9
days of Muharram where the incident of 10th of
Muharram are revised in great details and after that Matam
(mourning) is practiced. On the 10th of Muharram,
SHIAs lead processions to mourn over the martyrdom of Hazrat
Hussain (R.A) and the martyrs of Karbala. The crowd moves along
chanting Ya Hussain in loud wails.
Reported by Hazrat Abu Saeed
(R.A):
"The Holy Prophet
(S.A.W) has cursed the mourners and those who will listen to
them (attentively)." [Abu Dawood]
SHIAs do not end their wrongdoing
and transgression here but they walk around (some of them do at
unknown buildings) mourning and hurting themselves with sharp
objects. They show their sorrow and grief by inflicting wounds
on their own bodies with sharp objects (metal/tin specially)
tied to chains with which they scourge themselves. They do this
thinking that this act of theirs will depict the sufferings of
the martyrs. Many of them even hit their head with swords and
knives.
Moreover SHIAs indulge in Tabarra
especially in the month of Muharram. Tabarra is to abuse the
First three Caliphs (Khalifas) of Muslims; Hazrat Abu-Bakr
(R.A), Hazrat Umar Farooq (R.A), Hazrat Usman (R.A), Noble
mothers of Ummah; Hazrat Ayesha Siddiqa (R.A), Hazrat Hafsah
(R.A) and also Hazrat Ameer Muawiyah (R.A).
"The
more a SHIA indulges in Tabarra the more meritorious he
becomes." [Islah-ur-Rusum] (SHIA Ref)
The month of Muharram requires
good deeds but the SHIAs, they indulge in the indefensible
practices such as abusing the Sahabah (R.A) and
Ummahat-ul-Momineen (R.A) regarding which the Holy Prophet
(S.A.W) said:
“ALLAH!
ALLAH! Don't curse/object my Companions after me; whosoever
loved them, he loved them because of my love and whosoever kept
hatred with them, he kept hatred due to my hatred; whosoever
gave them pain, he gave the pain to me and whosoever gave the
pain to me he annoyed ALLAH; soon-ever ALLAH will give him worse
punishment.” [Tirimzi, Vol#2, Pg# 249]
On the 10th of
Muharram, SHIAs regard fasting as Haram. They practice Fa’qah on
that day. They do not eat or drink till Asr prayer time and then
open their fast by eating a little Karbala dust.
The Holy Prophet (S.A.W) observed
the fast of 10th of Muharram and commanded his
followers do so. The Holy Prophet (S.A.W) is reported to have
said:
“Observe the fast on the day of
A'shurah and oppose the Jews. Fast a day (combine) before it or
a day after.” (Bayhaqi)
These were some of the
impermissible acts which SHIAs practice on the month of
Muharram. To attribute the significance of A'shurah of the
martyrdom of Hazrat Hussain (R.A) is base less. The Islamic
history of full of blood and sacrifices of the martyrs. If we
start mourning for all Sahabah (R.A) then every day of the year
will be a day of mourning which is prohibited in Shari'ah. The
martyrdom of Hazrat Hussain (R.A) was a great tragedy but making
it a day of mourning, which Hazrat Muhammad (S.A.W) declared as
blessed, is an unpardonable sin. If mourning was permissible in
Islam then the day of demise of Hazrat Muhammad (S.A.W) would
have been more worthy for mourning and lamenting. To refrain
form all these innovations of SHIAs is very important because
these deprive us from the blessings of Allah.
The Holy Prophet (S.A.W) said:
“Those who live
after my death will see many disputes. I urge you to adhere my
Sunnah and the Sunnah of my rightly guided Caliphs (Khalifas)
who come after me. Hold on to it as if holding it with your
teeth. Beware, of newly-innovated matters for every innovation
is a going astray.” (Mishkawt)
At least SHIAs must behave and
feel some shame for 10th of Muharram as a sacred day
because on this very day, Nikkah of Umm-ul-Momineen, [Mother of
Hazrat Fatima (R.A)] Hazrat Khadija-tul-Kubra (R.A) was took
place with Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W). [Tarikh Al-Khamis, Vol#1,
Pg#407]
In the end, May Allah guide us on
the straight path and save us from every act which incurs His,
displeasure. Ameen, Ya Rabb-ul-A'lameen.
