Amongst the most common forms of cancer seen in men, prostate cancer is quite prevalent. Part of the course of treatment for this includes a host of medication used to target various aspects of the disease. Casodex is one such drug. It is made of a compound known as Bicalutamide which is a member of a group of drugs known as anti androgens.
Androgens are male hormones and those suffering from prostate cancer may have a very high level of androgens in their blood stream which can cause some adverse effects. To contain this high level of androgen, Casodex is a good solution.
Casodex is generally given in combination with another medication which mimics the action of a substance which prevents the release of testosterone (male hormone) from the testicles. Casodex must not be taken without this other medicine. The doctor may periodically alter the dosage of the medicines and one must take them strictly as per instructions.
Since this drug is meant to control androgens, it is quite obvious that it must not be taken by women or children. It is known to cause birth defects amongst babies if taken by pregnant women.
Any history of prior ailments such as liver and kidney diseases must be reported to the doctor. These may call for a dosage adjustment or alteration to suit your specific health conditions. The doctor may also choose to conduct tests on a regular basis to monitor your condition to check if the medication is having the desired effect. Do not miss these tests as they may prove to be an indicator of any treatment modification requirements.
Casodex is not known to cause any major life threatening side effects but if any discomfort is noticed in form of aches and pains contact the doctor immediately. It is advisable to talk to your doctor about any clarifications you may have about the drug's benefits.
