Basic Tips in Using An Espresso Coffee Machine

Prior to using your espresso machine, be sure are ready with the basic equipment and ingredients. You will need to have an espresso grinder, a few demitasse cups, espresso beans and some water. It is valuable to know that bottled spring water is not advisable. The high mineral content of spring water can cause scaling which may destroy your espresso machine. Filtered water is the best option.

Here are the basic steps to Espresso Coffee Machine use:

1) Fill up the water chamber with clear, cold filtered water. Secure the boiler cap. The recommended amount of water is an ounce per shot of espresso.

2) Put the coffee basket in the filter holder and lightly pack in the ground coffee. Most espresso filters tell you how much coffee to put in for your desired number of servings.

3) Remove scattered grounds around the filter and then place the filter holder in the espresso machine.

4) Securely position your demitasse or glass carafe beneath the spout. Turn on the machine and water will heat up and build enough pressure to push itself through the group coffee in the filter.

5) Foam floats atop your coffee, and when it turns white you should remove the cup from the machine (The ideal espresso has brown foam or "crema" on the top of the coffee. When it starts to turn white, it's an indication that the best tasting liquid has already been extracted.)

Grocery stores and specialty coffee shops offer a range of coffee roasts and flavors. Serious espresso drinkers often purchase an espresso grinder and make their own ground coffee from beans before brewing.
